Comments on Alton's new show? The first two episodes have already aired; two left to go. Food Network is showing lots of reruns, though, if you missed them.
I really enjoyed the two episodes so far. The show is a refreshing contrast to the other marketing-laden dreck that dominates most of Food Network now, and it shows off Alton's personality a bit more than his other shows.
One could argue that it's a direct ripoff of Anthony Bourdain's "No Reservations" show on the Travel Channel, just a U.S. version, with motorcycles thrown in (not to mention the all-male staff) to make Alton's usual nerdiness score a little higher to Tony's on the macho scale. That thought certainly occurred to me. But I think Alton really holds his own here, and starting out in his own stomping grounds (the South) allowed him to really shine. He does seem to have a sincere appreciation for old-style, mom 'n' pop roadfood establishments, which is a wonderful thing.

Re: Feasting on Asphalt
Sun, August 6, 2006 - 3:01 PMI have only watched the first one so far, but I liked it! I also like his appreciation of more modest places, those can be really good! I did not know there were only four episodes, though! -

Re: Feasting on Asphalt
Sun, August 6, 2006 - 3:33 PMI'm really liking it. It's nice to see AB in a more improvisational setting. No props (except that cool map), no big foam costumes. Just motorcycles, the road, and good food. I'm not really in the whole Americana thing, but there are definitely a few of those stops that I'd like to make myself.
I'm looking forward to part 3 because it looks like they're stopping in my next of the woods ... Pike's Peak in Colorado! Yay! -

Re: Feasting on Asphalt
Mon, August 7, 2006 - 11:31 AMI also recommend the recent "Behind the Eats" episode of Good Eats, a "behind-the-scene" kind of thing. Parts of it were quite humorous, and I liked learning about some of the history of the show, and what was real and what was not (e.g., certain sets and characters).
Sadly, I just checked the schedule and it looked like the last showing aired yesterday. But you know the Food Network; it's bound to come around again. -

Re: Feasting on Asphalt
Mon, August 7, 2006 - 11:40 AMI loved the Behind the Eats, especially seeing the truth about W and the set kitchen secrets. -

Re: Feasting on Asphalt
Wed, August 9, 2006 - 11:54 PMRob, those were great. I especially liked vignette #4: Alton at his best.
I will be very surprised if the Food Network shows that segment, since it goes against their marketing interests in promoting specific brands and businesses.

Re: Feasting on Asphalt
Thu, August 10, 2006 - 1:16 AMYou could win a contest Melody.
A few months ago, Food Network had a contest, where a few of the chefs helped redecorate peoples kitchens. Alton Brown was one of the chefs who helped out. The woman who won the chance to have Alton Brown redo her kitchen was a big Good Eats fan, and he let her do a cameo on his show. I forget the epesode, but I do remember she had one line. -

Thu, August 10, 2006 - 8:20 AMI think that she played one of those mysterious FDA agents. I'm thinking maybe in "Churn Baby Churn". -

Re: Feasting on Asphalt
Thu, August 10, 2006 - 12:55 PMI remember that. I was SO jealous, and his style was SO good. I wouldn't have been so smart about the tape though.. She did a really good one. Yeah.. SO not fair. I would give anything to meet Alton in person. Maybe he can gimme a few pointers on how NOT to freak out when cooking.. Since I pretty much CAN'T.
Yeah.. he's my hero! -

Re: Feasting on Asphalt
Sat, August 12, 2006 - 11:25 AMWell, we did not have that episode, hopefully it will repeat, something must have trumped it in the list. But now I just had to know about W, so i found this piece about the show on Wikipedia, it is pretty good!

Re: Feasting on Asphalt
Sun, August 13, 2006 - 1:47 AMAh yes, but it doesn't tell you WHO X really is!
Just saw the third episode, it was just as good as the previous ones; maybe even the best--that scene with the 70ish waitresses was fantastic.
Looks like Food Network is advertising a "Feasting on Asphalt" marathon this weekend, so you can probably catch up on all of them then (and learn the truth about X). -

Re: Feasting on Asphalt
Mon, August 14, 2006 - 5:27 AMOh, is it a Feasting on Asphalt episode? I thought it was a regular Good Eats! Then maybe I do have it!!! I am behind. Oh, I hope so! -
-
Re: Feasting on Asphalt
Tue, August 15, 2006 - 3:47 AMSorry, I was typing without thinking again. It was a Good Eats episode, not Feasting on Asphalt, so sadly I don't know when it will be on again.
So maybe I should go ahead and divulge the identity of X? -
-
Re: Feasting on Asphalt
Tue, August 15, 2006 - 8:32 AMpretty please? Especially if everyone saw it but me!!! -

Re: Feasting on Asphalt
Tue, August 15, 2006 - 9:30 AMYou're not the only one who missed it.
Spill the info on 'X', Melodious! -

Re: Feasting on Asphalt
Wed, August 16, 2006 - 2:24 AMShe's Alton's chiropractor. Seriously. They showed her working on him, cracking his vertebrae or whatever, so I guess that's where the joke about her being a sadist comes in. -
-
Re: Feasting on Asphalt
Wed, August 16, 2006 - 2:36 AMWhy are we calling her "X" instead for "W"?
-
-
Re: Feasting on Asphalt
Wed, August 16, 2006 - 12:44 PMThe W/X thing must have been a case of keyboard dyslexia. His chiropractor, that is pretty funny - I wonder how you go from that, to 'how about being the gadget person on my TV show". I sure hope that episode comes on again! -
-
Re: Feasting on Asphalt
Sat, August 19, 2006 - 4:45 AMIt was indeed a case of keyboard dyslexia--my slip. Clearly I'm in the throes of an advanced stage of Half-Heimers (that's when you're halfway there). At least I didn't start calling her "Y" as well. Sigh....
Maybe I got it wrong because when I think of a certain pronunciation of the letter "W," I think of a very specific person who is supposedly "leading" our country right now (and doing a piss-poor job of it, in my humble opinion). AB's chiropractor for president!
